250g vs 400g British Wagyu Steaks: Portions and Cost

A 400g steak contains 60% more raw beef than a 250g steak. That arithmetic helps you plan portions, but it does not show how thick either steak is, how long it will cook or which option is currently available. Use the actual selected pack and its label when shopping.

What changes on the plate?

Illustrative purchase Raw-weight allocation Possible meal plan
One 250g steak 250g for one or 125g each for two One steak main, or two smaller courses with other food
One 400g steak 400g for one or 200g each for two A shared steak with suitable sides
Two 250g steaks 500g total, or 250g each for two Two separate steak plates

These are hypothetical menu quantities, not descriptions of current stock or promises about appetite. Raw beef loses weight during cooking, and trimming can reduce what is served. Weigh the delivered pack if precise portions matter.

How should you compare cost?

Use the price for the exact selected pack, not an old catalogue snapshot. Divide its current charged price by its actual weight in kilograms. For example, if a hypothetical 250g steak costs £30, its unit price is £120/kg. If a hypothetical 400g steak costs £44, its unit price is £110/kg. The larger example has a lower unit price but costs £14 more in cash. These figures are arithmetic examples, not current Beleaev prices.

Two 250g steaks provide 500g raw in total, which is 100g more than one 400g piece and gives two separate steaks. Compare both the total bill and the eating plan. Delivery, sides and any discount applied at checkout can change the total.

Does a heavier steak need proportionally more cooking time?

No fixed percentage follows from weight. Thickness, shape, starting temperature and the cooking method matter. Two thinner steaks can behave differently from one thicker steak even when the combined weight is similar. Follow the received pack instructions and a method appropriate to the actual piece. Do not transfer a burger's safety advice to an intact steak or vice versa.

Choose the format you can use

Choose a smaller purchase when it fits the meal and the larger amount would create unwanted leftovers. Choose separate steaks when individual plates matter. If buying ahead, check whether the delivered pack is chilled or frozen and follow its storage and thawing instructions. For a broader comparison of pack value, see the pack-cost guide; for arrival planning, use the delivery and storage checklist.
