Sliced Smoked Salmon vs Smoked Salmon Bagel Trimmings

By Beleaev Family | Beleaev Caviar & Gourmet

Ready-sliced smoked salmon suits neat folds and visible layers; trimmings suit loose arrangements where a uniform slice is unnecessary. Compare the exact packs rather than assuming the products share ingredients, storage instructions or sensory quality. Both can form a caviar canapé with an equal measured portion.

Current 200g packs

Product Pack and format Catalogue price Per 100g purchased
Sliced smoked salmon 200g sliced cold-smoked Atlantic salmon £17.95 £8.98, rounded
Smoked-salmon bagel trimmings 200g chilled smoked-salmon offcuts £7.97 £3.99, rounded

Checked on 12 October 2026. The comparison is for these two 200g products, not a one-kilogram side against a small trimming pack. Catalogue price per purchased gram excludes delivery, discounts and any preparation loss.

Where each shape is useful

Fold slices low enough to stay within a bread or blini base. Arrange trimmings in overlapping loose pieces over the dairy layer; avoid compacting them into a paste. On a bagel or in cooked eggs, irregular pieces may suit the format as well as a whole slice. On a display board, slices allow a more uniform arrangement.

The ten-piece comparison below uses 60g from each pack and 20g caviar in total. It leaves 140g salmon in each opened pack. Decide how those remainders fit your meal plans and their exact labels before buying both just for five pairs of canapés.

Measured serving with caviar or roe

Make ten caviar toasts on one base: five use 12g sliced smoked salmon and five use 12g smoked-salmon trimmings. Every toast carries 2g Royal Baeri, giving five people a direct format comparison.

  • Yield: 10 canapés for 5 people
  • Smoked salmon: 12g per canapé
  • Caviar: 2g per canapé

Ingredients and purchase plan

Ingredient Recipe amount Pack to purchase
Royal Baeri Caviar 20g 1 x 20g Sampling tin
Smoked Salmon, Sliced, 200g 60g 1 x 200g pack
Smoked Salmon Bagel Trimmings (200g) 60g 1 x 200g pack
Sourdough bread 5 slices, about 200g 1 loaf
Crème fraîche 50g 1 small tub
Dill 3g 1 small bunch

Each 200g salmon pack leaves 140g after the recipe. Confirm how those separate remainders will be used under their own labels before opening both packs.

Equipment

  • 5cm cutter, bread knife and toaster or grill
  • Digital scale and ten small plates
  • Two forks, two boards and separate bowls
  • Non-metal caviar spoon

Assemble the slice and trimming groups

  1. Cut one common base. Use slices large enough for two matching rounds each, making ten pieces; use additional bread if the slices are too narrow. Toast them together and let surface steam clear.
  2. Prepare the sliced group. Weigh five 12g portions and fold each low enough to sit within the bread edge.
  3. Prepare the trimming group. Separate the pieces gently and weigh five loose 12g portions. Do not compress them into a paste.
  4. Add the dairy layer. Spread exactly 5g crème fraîche on each toast.
  5. Place salmon and caviar. Add one salmon portion to every base, then top each with 2g Royal Baeri and an equal pinch of dill.
  6. Serve one pair per person. Keep sliced salmon on the left and trimmings on the right across all five plates.

Use format rather than appearance as the question

The two products receive the same weight and toppings. The sliced product is folded, while trimmings are arranged as loose pieces because their formats differ. The plate can reveal which construction a guest prefers without asserting that either product has a better flavour.

Canapé fixes

  • The slice covers the bread edge: refold it rather than trimming away part of the 12g portion.
  • The trimmings fall loose: overlap the pieces over the crème fraîche without pressing them flat.
  • The bread becomes damp: cool it before spreading and assemble close to service.
  • The two groups are confused: use separate utensils and preserve one left-right order.

Allergens and chilled handling

Fish, milk and wheat, including gluten, are present. Bread may contain sesame or other allergens. Check both salmon packs for ingredients, cross-contact and opened-storage directions; do not assume they are identical. Keep salmon, dairy and caviar chilled until assembly and serve promptly.

Questions before ordering

Is the bought pack the serving quantity?

No. Use the ingredient amounts in the serving plan and keep the unused product under its own label. A larger retail pack does not automatically change the number of guests or the portion on each plate.

Does an equal portion prove the best flavour?

No. Equal amounts let guests choose between the formats, but the guide does not report a blind tasting or a universal preference.

Can every opened ingredient share one storage period?

No. Read the exact product instructions and any use-by date for each ingredient. Keep ready-to-eat seafood away from raw-food equipment and serve assembled dishes promptly.

For food handling, consult Food Standards Agency chilling guidance and cooking guidance. For caviar format and quantities, see the caviar pack-size guide.
