Omi Beef: Shiga's Historic Wagyu Name

Omi Beef is a Japanese regional beef name associated with Shiga Prefecture. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries lists Omi Beef as geographical indication registration No. 56, with Shiga as its production area. The name has a long history, but history alone does not prove that an individual pack is certified Omi Beef. Ask for the product’s identification and supply-chain records.

What does the name refer to?

The official registration lists the name Omi Ushi or Omi Gyu and identifies a registered producer group. The Omi Beef promotion association describes a tradition of Japanese Black cattle raised in Shiga. That is a regional designation; it is not a cut, a Japanese A5 grade or a statement that every steak from Shiga tastes identical.

Why is its history often mentioned?

MAFF describes a beef tradition in the Omi area dating back centuries. This context helps explain why the name is well known in Japan. It should remain background for a buyer: a historical account does not replace the current documentation of the meat being offered, nor does it prove a particular maturation period or feeding regime.

Read a retail description in layers

  • Origin: is Omi Beef specifically documented for the pack?
  • Grade: what national grade, if any, is actually stated?
  • Cut: is it ribeye, sirloin, fillet or another muscle?
  • Format: what is the raw weight and intended number of portions?
  • Handling: is any ageing or storage claim separately supported?

If a retailer uses “Japanese Wagyu” only, do not infer Omi provenance from a picture or general discussion of Japanese beef. If a documented Omi pack is offered, compare its actual cut and portion with alternatives for your intended meal. A regional label does not set the cooking time.
