How to Cook Japanese A5 Wagyu at Home: A Kitchen Plan

By

For Japanese A5 Wagyu at home, organise the meal around the product's format: a steak, thin slices and a whole joint need different methods. Prepare sides and serving equipment first, then cook the beef in manageable batches. There is no single A5 cooking time that works for every cut.

Choose ribeye or fillet for a steak meal, and sliced chuck roll for a thin-slice dish. Check the selected weight in the cards before ordering.

Which cooking route matches your purchase?

Match the preparation format first. A whole sirloin cannot borrow a small steak's pan schedule, and a steak is not automatically a ready-sliced hot-pot pack.

Format Kitchen plan
Ribeye or sirloin steak Use a pan sized for the piece, checking thickness and surface colour. Follow the relevant steak guide.
Fillet steak Keep pieces separate and check each one; compact shape and thickness affect the finish.
Sliced chuck roll Separate slices as directed and cook small batches for the chosen hot-pot or griddle dish.
Whole approximately 3kg sirloin Plan adequate storage, equipment and a joint-specific cooking or portioning method.

What should happen before cooking day?

Confirm delivery timing, storage space and the product's chilled or frozen instructions. Do not schedule a frozen joint to arrive immediately before dinner and assume it will thaw in time.

  • Read the pack's date and storage instructions when the delivery arrives.
  • For frozen products, allow enough time for complete fridge thawing without relying on a fixed overnight promise.
  • Decide the number of raw portions and check the total selected pack weight.
  • Choose a simple starch, vegetables and a condiment that can be prepared before the beef.

What should be ready before the beef enters the pan?

Set out a clean cooked-meat plate, serving board, knife and separate raw-meat utensils. Have sides ready according to their own safe preparation instructions. This removes the need to leave a cooked steak waiting while you start the rest of dinner.

Dry the beef's surface as directed and use suitable ventilation. Follow the product's advice about added fat; do not assume every cut needs a pool of butter. Keep sauces in small separate dishes so guests can taste the beef before adding more.

How should you manage the cooking itself?

Cook without crowding and judge each piece by its thickness, exterior and appropriate temperature checks. Reduce excessive heat if fat is smoking heavily or the outside is burning. Small batches are easier to manage than forcing every portion into one pan.

A grade is not a food-safety instruction. The Food Standards Agency allows properly cooked intact whole beef cuts to remain pink inside, but minced, rolled and otherwise non-intact meat needs thorough cooking. Mechanically tenderised or injected products must not inherit intact-steak advice. Follow the pack and keep raw utensils away from cooked food.

How do you finish the meal without rushing?

Rest steaks as appropriate for their format, slice across the grain and serve in small manageable portions. For a table-cooked meal, keep raw meat separate and bring out only the next batch; do not use the same tongs for raw slices and finished food.

Our portion-planning guide uses raw purchase weights. For example, 200g divided between two people is 100g raw each before cooking loss, not a guaranteed cooked serving weight.

Frequently asked questions

Should all A5 Wagyu be cooked for 60–90 seconds?

No. Cut, thickness, starting condition and equipment differ. A stopwatch cannot replace the appropriate product method.

Do I need a whole joint for four guests?

No. Compare portioned packs and total raw weight first. A large joint introduces more storage and preparation work.

How do I plan UK or London delivery?

Online ordering is available 24/7, not a promise of 24-hour delivery. The gourmet shipping policy states 1–3 business days for eligible Monday-morning to Thursday-morning orders; later-week orders are dispatched the following Monday. Confirm the applicable service at checkout.
