Japanese A5 Wagyu ribeye marbling infographic with BMS 10–12 label

How to Read Japanese Wagyu and Kobe Beef Labels

By

A Wagyu label is easiest to read when you separate origin, grade, cut and quantity. Kobe is a further designation, not a decorative word for marbling. Knowing what each term does helps you spot missing information without assuming that every unfamiliar label is false.

The photograph and product example here are Japanese A5 fillet from Kagoshima, not Kobe beef. For the underlying category distinction, see our Kobe beef and Wagyu guide.

Key takeaways

  • Read each part of the product name separately.
  • Do not treat a serving style as proof of origin.
  • Match the selected weight to the quantity you intend to receive.
  • Keep the delivered label for storage, use-by and product identification.

What does a real product name tell you?

Take Japanese A5 Wagyu Fillet, 200g as an example. The name combines several different kinds of information. It is useful precisely because you can separate them instead of reading the whole phrase as one luxury claim.

Part of the name What it tells you What it does not establish
Japanese The stated country of origin A specific farm or regional designation
A5 The stated yield and quality grade Kobe identity or an exact BMS number
Wagyu The cattle category being described Every detail of the animal's pedigree
Fillet The cut The thickness of every available format
200g The lead pack format The weight of a different option selected on the page

The current fillet description adds Kagoshima origin and Japanese Black cattle. Those are product-specific statements; they should not be copied to another item merely because it also says Wagyu.

What changes when the label says Kobe?

A Kobe claim adds a separate designation that needs support. MAFF's Kobe entry connects that registered name with Hyogo and Tajima cattle. A Japanese flag, an A5 title or a high price does not supply that missing connection.

Words such as “Kobe-style” describe a claimed style or comparison; they do not establish that the beef qualifies as Kobe. Before paying specifically for Kobe, ask the seller exactly what designation the delivered product carries. Read the answer rather than trying to infer it from the imagery.

Where does traceability fit on the label?

Traceability connects product information to an identifiable animal or supply chain. JETRO's UK explanation describes Japan's ten-digit cattle identification system. A number needs to relate to the beef being supplied, not just appear in a general example.

Ask how the seller connects the retail pack to its supporting information. Do not confuse your order number with an animal identifier. If an origin or designation is essential to your purchase, resolve it before ordering; our authenticity checklist goes deeper into that process.

Which fields matter after delivery?

Keep the current pack instructions for storage, use-by date and any preparation restrictions. A general article cannot set a shelf life for every chilled or frozen item. Check that the pack and selected weight match the purchase, and raise any discrepancy with the retailer before relying on it for a fixed occasion.

Multiple portions also need careful reading: two 200g steaks and one 400g piece have the same total raw weight but may need different cooking arrangements. The selection, not just the page heading, decides what goes into your basket.

Choose a clearly described cut

The card below links the current Japanese A5 fillet example. Choose the weight first, then use the fillet cooking guide for preparation. It is not a Kobe offer, and no active Kobe product was listed in the checked range on 28 August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does a flag prove the beef's full provenance?

No. A graphic can illustrate a claim but cannot replace the product information supporting it.

Is Wagyu a cut?

No. Fillet, ribeye, sirloin and chuck describe cuts. Read the cut alongside the cattle and origin information.

Can the same page offer different pack weights?

Yes. Check the selected option and quantity before adding it to your basket, then confirm your order summary.

For UK gourmet delivery, eligible orders placed Monday morning to Thursday morning have a 1–3 business-day policy window. Thursday-afternoon to Sunday orders dispatch the following Monday; check postcode options at checkout.
